When buying diamond rings we sum up the total weight of the diamonds that are set in the ring. This includes any side stones, or pave detail. The diamond is considered 1 carat when the weight of the diamond is 0.2 grams. One thing you’ll want to look out for is the difference between the total carat weight and the weight of the center stone. For example, a ring could have a solitaire setting featuring a 1-carat oval diamond, or the ring could have a 0.90-carat center stone and 0.10-carat side stones. The choice comes down to personal preference.

Color: A high color grade essentially means a whiter diamond. That is why you should buy a diamond within this color range: D, E, F, G, H, I ( D being the highest). A lower color grade, such as J is also possible depending on the cut. For example, emerald cut diamonds tend to mask color exceptionally well. There are always exceptions to this guideline.
Clarity: As a rule of thumb, you should always choose from SI and above. A higher clarity (VS/VVS) comes with a higher price tag.
The Cut: The cut grade affects the way the diamond catches and reflects light, ultimately resulting in how it sparkles. In general, we recommend buying diamonds with a very good cut grade or above. If you decide to buy a 0.90-carat diamond (about 10% less by weight) you can save up to 30%. 0.90-0.95 carat diamonds look almost identical to a 1 carat stone and if you add a few small diamonds on each side, the total carat in the ring will reach 1 carat.
